How to Prepare Your Kids for a Studio Photo Session
Tips for Studio Photos with Kids that Feel Fun, Relaxed, and Natural
Mom, Dad—this one’s for you.
Maybe you’re getting ready to bring your little ones to the studio, or maybe you’ve already booked your session (yay!).
I know the first thing that usually comes to mind is outfits—what colors, what style, maybe even something matching. But then comes the real worry: how will my kids behave? Will they listen? Will we actually get those dreamy photos for the living room wall?
Take a deep breath. Really—don’t overthink it.
Try to let go of the pressure and the expectations. The magic always shows up in the little, in-between moments—that’s what I love capturing most.
My sessions are calm and relaxed, always designed with little ones in mind. I give families the space and time they need so kids can just be themselves. The goal isn’t perfect poses—it’s real, natural photos that feel like them.
And honestly, here’s what I see all the time: the moment parents let go—both for themselves and for their kids—something beautiful happens. Children settle in, they relax, and suddenly they’re free to just be who they are. That’s when we get those sweet, genuine photos that mean the most.
So, with that in mind, here are a few simple tips to make the whole experience smooth and fun for everyone.
1. Relax, Don’t Overpack.
Honestly, no need to pack a ton of outfits or props. I’m all about less is more. Comfy outfits always win, and kids feel so much better when they’re not stuck in something uncomfortable. Same with toys—just bring their favorites as they are, and I’ll capture the little moments you’ll want to remember forever.
2. Timing is everything.
Every kid has their “sweet spot” during the day, so it helps to book when they’re happy and full of energy—not right before a nap or snack time. My sessions are short and sweet, so we can catch the fun without pushing it too far.
3. Tiny Snacks, Big Smiles.
My priority is comfort over perfection. A quick, easy snack can make all the difference (crackers or fruit snacks are perfect—just skip the messy chocolate on clothes). If your kiddo has a favorite toy or blanket, bring it along too. And if we need to pause for a few minutes, that’s totally fine. Sessions aren’t about rushing; they’re about keeping things relaxed and happy.
4. Candid & True
Forget perfect smiles—what I’m looking for are the real expressions. Kids being themselves—that’s where the magic is. Silly faces, quiet moments, big laughs… those are the things you’ll love looking back on. That’s what makes your photos truly timeless.
5. Parents, Your Energy Matters
Kids feel your vibe—if you’re relaxed, they relax. I’ll guide the flow: sometimes giving them a little space works best, and other times being close gives them the comfort they need. Clothing note: even if you’re not planning to be in the shot, stick to neutrals (black/ivory/white). Bright colors (like red) can reflect onto your child and change the tones in the photo.
Wrapping It Up.
At the end of the day, I just want to keep things fun for your kids and easy for you. You’ll end up with photos that are real, true, and timeless— sweet little glimpses of your kids in this moment, ready to hang on your walls.
